Heart disease is the number one killer of women! If you're a woman, you may not believe you're as vulnerable to a heart attack as men–but you are. Women account for nearly half of all heart attack deaths. Heart disease is the number one killer of both women and men.
Â
Women are less likely than men to believe they're having a heart attack and more likely to delay in seeking emergency treatment. Furthermore, diagnosing heart attacks can be more difficult in women than men because women tend to have less "typical" symptoms. Women are more likely than men to experience some of the less common symptoms, such as shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, and back or jaw pain.
The Hope Heart Institute provides a free community education series for the family titled Women Take Heart™. The mission of Women Take Heart™ is to create awareness and provide tools for healthier living. Women Take Heart™ features free health screenings, information, and a series of interactive talks and activities centered on stress reduction, nutrition, movement, heart physiology and more! Women are encouraged to learn all they can about preventing heart attacks and getting the earliest possible treatment if they experience any symptoms of a heart attack or heart disease.
The Hope’s Women Take Heart™ program is customizable to meet the specific needs of your community. We have brought this program to such varied venues as The African American Academy, Evergreen Hospital, Mission Creek, and the Washington Correctional Center for Women, and would be happy to talk to you about how we can customized a Women Take Heart program to your needs.
